When young Jack's appendix bursts, the delay before he can be operated on is almost as excruciating as the pain in his abdomen. During the week of waiting, the food is awful, the boredom is dreadful and, to make matters worse, he feels de-humanised by the staff's insistence on talking to his parents rather than to him. |
